What is a Respirator Fit Test?

According to OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard (1910.134), respiratory fit tests are required to guarantee that employees’ respirators are practical and protective against health risks. Respiratory fit testing involves verifying that a mask functions significantly and adequately reduces a person’s risk of inhaling airborne hazards.

Types of Respirator Fit Testing

Qualitative Fit Testing (QLFT)

One type of respirator fit test is a qualitative test that incorporates a test solution that has a distinct smell, taste, or irritation response. During the test, the employee provides feedback about whether they detect a target substance while performing exercises wearing a respirator.

This respirator fit testing is common for half-mask respirators, like the N95 mask. It relies upon the wearer’s senses instead of numerical data and is acceptable when exposure levels fall below OSHA permissible exposure levels.

Quantitative Fit Testing (QNFT)

A quantitative respirator fit test utilizes specialized instruments to determine the exact amount of leakage around a person’s mask seal. It’s required for full-face respirators and when enhanced protection is needed.

The QNFT offers objective and measurable results and is OSHA-mandated in high-risk situations.

Who Needs a Respirator Fit Test?

People who work in healthcare settings, construction zones, manufacturing jobs, and other high-risk environments need properly fitting respirators to prevent harmful exposures.

Here are some examples:

• Healthcare (infectious diseases)
• Welding and painting (vapors and fumes)
• Construction (asbestos, silica, and dust)
• Manufacturing (chemicals and particulates)

OSHA requires a respirator test before a respirator is first used, annually to verify it’s providing ongoing protection, and any time a respirator model or equipment changes.

Approved Respirators for Fit Testing

If you need an N95 mask fit test, your respirator must be appropriately certified for the work you do.

The following NIOSH-approved respirators are eligible for OSHA-compliant respiratory fit testing:

• N95 respirators
• Full-face respirators
• Half-face respirators

However, KN95 and non-approved masks can’t be used for an official respirator fit test, as they do not meet OSHA requirements.

How to Prepare for a Respirator Fit Test

For the most accurate results, bring the same respirator to your test that you use on the job. Before your respirator test, shave any facial hair that may interfere with the mask seal around your face.

Don’t eat, drink (except for water), smoke, or chew gum for at least 15 minutes before your test. A respirator fit test only takes about 15 minutes to complete.
